Getting to Erewhon
The road to Erewhon is a scenic drive into the mountains past high country rivers and lakes.
Travelling Times:
From Christchurch:
Two Hours
From Ashburton: One Hour Twenty Minutes
From Mt Somers: 50 Minutes

You don't need a 4WD to get to Erewhon and cars regularly come up this scenic road. The only vehicle we wouldn't recommend is one with extremely low clearance (boy-racer style) as that will drag on the gravel. You will lose cell phone reception just outside of Mt Somers, but there are properties along the way and an emergency phone at Lake Clearwater should you have problems.

You might find this link Journey to Edoras useful with its information about getting to Mount Sunday which was a major film venue for the second Lord of the Rings film. Erewhon is ten minutes further along the road from the Mount Sunday carpark.

Basically from Mount Somers you turn onto Ashburton Gorge Road which is signposted as Lake Clearwater. Stay on this road for 50 minutes and we are right at the end. The last 35 minutes from historic Hakatere is on gravel road which is in good condition apart from some corrugations. You will pass Lake Clearwater / Camp & we are 25 minutes from there. Once Past the Potts river bridge (sealed) you will have three fords to cross. The first two are generally dry but can be rough after nor-west rain scours bits out. Just drive through slowly. The last ford by our hayshed is always wet but is an excellent crossing.

This Google map should help you find your way to us. Just plug in your starting point. We have used Christchurch airport by default. Travelling from Christchurch it is quickest to take the Main South Road / Thompsons Track route, however the Rakaia Gorge route is very scenic.
